SciFi Channel becomes Syfy… seriously
King Rat - March 16, 2009 1:01 pm
Press release
Syfy more clearly captures the mainstream appeal of the world’s biggest entertainment category, and reflects the network’s ongoing strategy to create programming that’s more accessible and relatable to new audiences. Syfy will continue to celebrate the traditional roots of the genre, while opening the brand aperture to accommodate a broader range of imagination-based entertainment.

Seriously? I’m not a huge fan of the term Sci-Fi because it connotes schlocky Lost in Space style entertainment as well as Klingon costume wearing losers. (This is one reason I don’t attend Norwescon.) But people also associate it with halfway decent science fiction and the like. It’s not that bad.

Syfy is awful. And I’m betting this is just an early move to get completely away from genre. Kind of like Court TV is now just edited scenes of cops arresting people called TruTV.

Syfy will flop. It will lose the few science fiction genre geeks still watching the channel, and it will not gain a general audience. Prepare for lots of bad reality television.

Bad reality television - as opposed to good reality television? In my opinion "bad reality television" is redundant.

That and I keep reading it as all one word, pronounced 'siffy'.

They've been going downhill for years now. I'm not holding on to much hope for their future.

I'd like to raise a toast to the end of an era, but I think that era ended a long time ago. *sigh*

I just bristle at the fact that they are trying to couch this in terms of "We are changing the name to distinguish ourselves and our programming from the other cable networks." No, no you aren't. Your name was quite distinguished from the other cable networks, and indicated clearly the thrust of your programming. YOU are changing your name 'cause you want to copyright it and make money off of such things and you can't do that with the present name.

Why not just SAY that up front? Don't bury that behind a wall of marketing/advertising mumbo jumbo that truly makes no sense. Gah.

To be fair, that's exactly what Bonnie Hamer (sp?) the head of the company said in her remarks.

It was buried in there. It wasn't the main reason they gave. They spun a bunch of fluff about wanting to "distinguish the channel and programming" first. Which is utter bs. Which is my gripe.

Once BSG has run its course, I never have to concern myself with the new "SeeFee" venereal disease/reality show channel again.

What's really bothering copy-editor me is that "to imagine" is a transitive verb. Imagine greater WHAT?

("Greater branding" being the har-de-har-har answer.)

From a descriptive abbreviation to nonsense. Sounds like their programming alright.

Other than BSG, there was no "decent" scifi-ish programming on there anyway. Just lots of shitty movies that could have been easily made in the 70's and early 80's by that one guy I can't think of right now. You know, the disaster and monster movie guy.

Damn it, I had his name in my head on Saturday.

P.S. Was "SyFy" created by the same morons that came up with "Say WA"?
