Why do we, as a society, provide food stamps for the hungry but not sex stamps for the celibate?

Because the celibate are choosing not to have sex, whereas the hungry actually want to eat.

Merriam-Webster, more or less. The etymology of the word referred to marriage rather than sex (because of course there was no sex without marriage, uh huh). In common, current usage, though, I believe that the choice ("vow") is implied.

SO we'll do things to keep people alive, but we don't give a crap if they are happy alive? It's a plausible distinction.

Because we clearly have our priorities out of whack.

Its probably Bush's fault.

(and there is a bad joke to be had in that last sentence, but I haven't the time to figure it out.)
