Planes, Trains and Buses

I'm going to go to San Francisco to visit my brother, his wife, and my nephew. I'm strongly considering taking Amtrak or Greyhound instead of flying. It'll be cheaper and more relaxing and I'll get more reading in. Primarily because both options will take about 20 hours each instead of 5 hours.

I'm thinking of continuing on Greyhound after that, stopping in small towns across America solving crimes and assisting locals against nefarious businessmen who run these towns.

take the train. way prettier ride, and trains are just much sexier than busses.

and the food is good, too, usually. The best pancakes I've ever had in my life were on the train ride when I moved up here from California.

I agree with the train option, too. Better for reading, imo.

I'm thirding the train option. When I was dating a guy in Portland I took either the train or the bus (depending on which was cheaper at the moment) down there nearly every weekend. The train is much more comfortable. There is more seat room, you can get up and walk around, it is more scenic, train stations are more comfortable and less scary than bus stations, and of course the dinning and snack cars are a huge plus. I love traveling by train.

the amtrak is great
the coast starlight is what you'll be on. it goes into oakland and from there you'll take a bus into San Francisco.

make sure you get a seat on one of the observation cars that face the water!

those are the best and worth it!

Feb 22, 2007, returning Feb 28, 2010?

You'll need a little time to do the whole crime solving thing.

The train from Seattle down to California is really nice. Especially if you get a sleeper car. If the schedule hasn't changed you will be spending one night on the train.

I don't know if they do it anymore, but the time I took it a few years ago they had a wine and cheese thing, and if you're in a sleeper car it's included in the cost of the ticket.

Personally I like travelling by train, but it takes a long time, it's more expensive than flying, and that turns a lot of people off. However if time and money are no object then I think it's a great way to go. However this time of year I believe you'll be going through a lot of the really nice Washington and Oregon scenery at night.

Crazy, I was just researching Amtrack times and prices to SF a couple of days ago. If you have the time, then go for it!

Another recommendation for the train! Less cramped, dining car has beer/wine options, prettier view, less likely to be sitting next to the weird, smelly, cheetos guy, you can stretch your legs out and overhead compartment for luggage.

You need a great dane or a trench coat to enhance your crime solving cred.

take the train

if I had time I would take the train anywhere it goes, simply because I don't have to undress and unpack to get in the airport.

warning: California/Seattle trains seem to be late about half the time. Like 4-8 hours late. So don't make any big plans for the day you're supposed to get there.
