It's really irritating to me that all the major online news sites have exactly the same top ten stories. Do they have no independent judgment as to what is newsworthy?

I hear you.

You've mentioned podcasts. I have been watching the video news podcast "Democracy Now!" for a year. They do well covering international events and issues that the major American news pays little attention to. Also, I recently starting watching the video podcast of "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams". Not because I think NBC is great, but the video is decent quality.

Have you run across any other good newscasts?

The only general news podcast I listen to is the weekly Best of As It Happens. Which focuses on Canadian news. Also, Today in Parliament from the BBC is great for knowing what's going on in government in Great Britain. Most everything I listen to is either very focused (books, science, etc.) or is music.
