Jury duty day 3

Figure I ought to comment on what happened Wednesday morning. For posterity's sake, cause hundreds of years from now people will be reading my every word for daily life in the 21st century.

On Wednesday, I was the subject of the 5th preemptory challenge (of 6 this time) by the prosecution. Basically, as soon as others in the box were eliminated and I sat down there, they excused me.

For those who don't know, I've seen two ways that the process works. The first is that when one side challenges a juror, the next juror in line takes their place in the jury box. The other way I saw was for the defense and prosecution to simply work from their lists and nobody moved. This judge worked off the former method.

Since I was juror 26, there were a few folks who needed to be excused first before I took my place in the box.

So, if you want to be in the jury, you probably shouldn't express any strong opinions whatsoever. They will ask your opinions about all sorts of things that are only tangentially related. What I noticed is that anyone who expressed strong opinions on anything was excused by one side or the other.

The lawyers aren't supposed to tell you the facts of the case, but the judge this time allowed them some leeway and they gave hypothetical scenarios involving selling lemonade that allowed us to figure out what the case was. The defendant was arrested in possession of cocaine. He was charged with possesion with intent to deliver. Someone else was taking the money. The prosecution was claiming that the defendant was the delivery person. The defense was claiming he was buying for his own personal use, not delivering for the dealer.
