Now, I am not going to be one of those people who cleans before the maid arrives so that I won't look like a slob. I don't have that much misplaced pride. However, I do need to have as much of my floorspace bare as possible. So I started tidying things up. I consolidated my boxes of stuff into fewer boxes, and restacked them in my storage room. See, I tend to look for something and then just leave the boxes unstacked so I can get at stuff easier next time. (Except I'm really just too lazy to restack them.)
I decided to take a break, logged onto the internet, and checked email. You'd think I wouldn't need to log on, since theoretically this is an always-on connection. But it turns out the USB 802.11g dongle loses connection when idle. In fact, I often have to reboot to regain connection. But I have little problem if I stay connected.
I'm told part of the problem is that the 802.11g shares the frequency band with cordless phones. I've noticed that when my phone rings, I often lose connection. So this weekend I picked up a 4.8 set of cordless phones, so hopefully I won't have that problem anymore (once I hook them up). Still, I'm sure other folks in the building have the older 2.4 phones and that may be causing some of my issues.
Back to the connecting to the internet thing, I have my google customized home page up, with the calendar widget front and center. Only it says that carpet cleaning is tomorrow. Today was not the 18th as I thought. So I can clear floor space at a much more leisurely pace.
