On the bus this morning, I had an idea for a book I could write. I'm a pretty damn good software development lead. There are lots of books on software project management, although most I've found are crap. But I haven't seen any books specifically on being a software lead. A software development lead is a hybrid person who still codes, but also has some management responsibilities. There are tasks related to managing people, managing projects, and managing careers. Anyway, since I haven't seen any books that put together the items that can help a person be an excellent lead.
So a few tasks:
- Do a good literature search to find out if there is such a book.
- Research publishing stuff to find out what things I need to do to pitch this idea to publishers. I.e., find an agent, etc.
- Write up an outline of the book, and possibly a sample chapter or two. I imagine this will be important in getting the idea sold.
Also, techs in the audience, especially those who are developers, should chime in here if they think of books that cover this area. Like I wrote, there are lots of books out there, but I can't think of any targetted at the lead position.
