The Straight Story opens with music very reminiscent of the Twin Peaks Theme. Not surprising, given both the movie and television series were scored by Angelo Badalamenti. David Lynch also directs the movie, but the movie is very un-Lynchian. Most of David Lynch's works are unconventionally disturbing. For instance, I had to return Blue Velvet to Netflix because I couldn't really stomach the story. The Straight Story twists emotions more conventionally. The movie is spare. Everything is essential to meeting Alvin Straight. Everything else is simply not included.
Alvin Straight drives a John Deere lawn-mower from his home in Iowa to see his brother in Mt. Zion, Wisconsin 10 years after the two have last spoken. His brother, Lyle, has suffered a stroke. Alvin is an old geezer who has seen about everything life has to offer, and has learned to separate the wheat from the chaff.
Watch the movie, if you haven't already. David Lynch doesn't need to be weird to affect you.
