Open membership

I've been involved in groups before that closed their membership and I watched them get less and less interesting and die out. Attempts to keep out the riff-raff really just end up cutting out the new blood that keeps a group alive.

In other news, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is overly long. My god people, have you never heard of editing?

I want to ride my bicycle

I want to ride my bike.

Yesterday, Jason took me and my bike up to Greg's Greenlake Cycle to have them take a look at the broken shifter. I figured they would take a quick look, tell me a part was broken, and that I could come get the bike in a week after they had ordered and replaced the part.

Surprisingly, the problem was not a missing or broken piece. Instead, it was an extra piece. The shifter contained an extra screw rattling around inside, and it caught itself in the shifter gears. So the nice man at Greg's removed the screw, adjusted the derailleurs, and sent me on my way, free of charge.

Not wanting to waste the opportunity, I climbed on my bike at 4:30 p.m. today and rode it downtown to Bed Bath and Beyond. Friday, someone stole my load of towels from the dryer, so I needed to replace them.

I have discovered a couple of things. First, I am horribly out of shape. I knew this, but I had it confirmed to high heaven today. A leisurely ride to 3rd and Virginia caused my heart to race something wicked. Second, Seattle isn't very bicycle friendly. No bicycle racks at 3rd and Virginia. And the railing at the store was too thick to let me lock both the tire and bike to it. I banked on the shortness of my visit and only locked up the frame. Third, I can't figure out how to get the front tire off the bike quickly. I thought all bikes came with quick release front tires these days. Probably so, but I was't bright enough to separate the two. Fourth, traffic scares the fuck out of me. Last time I rode (other than getting this thing home), was in North Idaho, land of the rush minute. I want to move home now. (Curse the lack of social activity there.)

I got about 45 minutes of heart rate elevating cardio exercise in today. Better than any time in the last year and several months. I haven't yet decided if I will try to ride the thing downtown instead of catching the #70 tomorrow morning.
