Popular science fiction and fantasy authors

Pretty much every science fiction or fantasy author ends up believing one of two things about themselves: that their universes are improved by knowing every little detail, or that new stories are best told in 1000 page books. Those that buy into the first fantasy end up writing 15 books in a series and at the end (if you've read them all), you know everything there is to know about every character and about everything about the twists that make their universe different from every other science fiction author's universe. Those who fall into the second category think that since it worked for Stephen King, it must work for them. All of them are wrong.
